RENO, Nev. — A science exhibition focused on mental illness is currently in Reno at The Discovery Museum.

"A couple of years ago, when we realized our community was going to focus on mental health, we put in a reservation for this exhibition, and it's taken a couple of years, but here we have it," Chief Advancement Officer at The Discovery Patrick Turner said.

The exhibition, titled 'Mental Health: Mind Matters' features interactive installations that actually allow visitors to experience some of the hallucinations and other symptoms of mental illnesses.

"One of the exhibits in here is a set of headphones that you can put on, and once you have them on, it mimics what you would hear if you had schizophrenia," Turner said.

Mind Matters comes to Reno partly thanks to Molina Healthcare, which provided much of the funding for it.

The intention is to destigmatize mental illness, underscoring the fact that mental illness, like physical illness, is not a choice or a personal flaw, but a medical condition that requires care.

"It's hands on, so people can actually experience things like schizophrenia and PTSD and build empathy that way through this exhibition," Turner said.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 18% of all U.S. adults have at least one mental illness -- that's almost one in every five people.

"[Molina Healthcare] also provided different resources that are available at our resource center, and then over here in this annex, we're going to have things like tabling and programming," Chair of the Board of Directors for The Discovery Sarah Porter said.

The exhibit opens to the general public on Saturday and will remain open through Sept. 8. Tickets can be purchased online.
