Carl Nassib, who became the first active NFL player to come out as gay while with the Las Vegas Raiders, announced he will retire from football.

Nassib posted a statement to social media Wednesday revealing he would step away from the game.

"Football has given me more than I ever could have imagined," the statement reads. "I can truly hang up my helmet for the last time knowing I gave it everything I had."

A defensive end from Penn State, Nassib was selected by Cleveland in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft and spent seven seasons in the league.

He appeared in 27 games with the Raiders over the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Hemade history in 2021 when he announced that he was gay, a revelation that earned support from the Raiders, the NFL and many LGBTQ+ organizations.

He spent the 2022 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Nassib says he will now focus on his company Rayze, described on its website as "a mobile platform that uses positive social media to simplify the way we give back."
