One person was killed and five others were hurt in a shooting at a subway station in New York during Monday's evening commute, according to officials.
Rep. Ritchie Torres said the shooting occurred "in and near the Mount Eden subway station in the Bronx." He added that the shooter is still on the run.
Just after 7 p.m. from the subway station, NYPD and Metro Transit Authority officials provided an update on what they've learned so far in their investigation.
NYPD's Chief of Transit Michael Kemper said authorities do not believe the shooting was random.
Shots rang out around 4:35 p.m. ET. Officials said multiple 911 calls reported shots fired at the Mt. Eden station.
NYPD believes the incident began when two groups of teenagers began fighting on the train. Kemper said at least one of the teens in the groups pulled out a gun and fired shots.
People began fleeing from the train onto the northbound platform when more shots rang out. That's where NYPD found six victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Kemper said all six were taken to area hospitals, where a 34-year-old man later died from his injuries.
The other five victims were identified as follows: a 15-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl, a 28-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman, and a 71-year-old man.
Following questions from a reporter, officials confirmed the injuries to the two female victims were not life-threatening.
Officials did not confirm which of the victims may have been part of the two groups fighting or random bystanders.
ABC News reports that the gun used in the shooting was not immediately recovered.
Video from television news helicopters showed a subway train stopped at the station and orange evidence cones on the elevated platform.
Authorities urged the public to avoid the scene "due to an active police investigation." Officials at the press conference said the scene will remain active as detectives work to collect evidence.
Officials confirmed they believe there to be at least one suspect in this investigation but as the department analyzes surveillance video and images, they will release more information as well as photos if available.
Metro Transit Authority Chairman Janno Lieber says the entire organization is in mourning and that it is determined to fight back against gun crime.
NYPD officials reiterated that what happened at the subway station is not normal, saying there must be swift and serious consequences, calling the incident "rare and unacceptable."
"You are now NYPD's most wanted," one NYPD official stated into the camera. "We suggest you turn yourself in."
